The following are excerpts from letter inside birthday card I received from Elvis on June 29th, 77. He had told me in May that I would get my birthday present on the 4th of July-my birthday is May 30th and I asked why did I have to wait until then? In that on stage sultry tone of voice he said, “I want to…light your fire, honey!” Then said it was being made and there had been problems. I got the card and letter in June and since it was one of the 3 actual “letters” in nearly 15 years, that would have been more than enough! I wouldn’t take gifts from him very often-he had to sneak them in and after I as he said “got all over” him for “spoiling my little girl” and returned several things that were way too expensive I thought; he was very careful what he “sneaked in”. But this time, for some reason, I didn’t give him any static about getting me something-and I didn’t ask for any thing usually other than him playing guitar, organ or just being funny. He always tried to do that-to please us any way he could though he’d grumble that “wasn’t a gift-it’s just more of the same-me bein’ a durn fool”. Jimmie and I laughed over that “fool” a lot. I teased Elvis about his having made “two fatal mistakes” in our relationship-he made me angry a couple of times-but we got passed it. I told him he just had one more mistake –that was as far as I’d go and---he’d better not let me find it or that would be the bitter end! He took that seriously, though I would have forgiven him. He wasn’t sure, and had to ask like a little boy...thinking he might somehow fail to live up to expectations.  - Wanda June Hill

I hope honey, you will know that I appreciated all the times you have ran around for me, and listened to me and tried to help me out of an emotional maze. I could never repay you for the time and attention you’ve given to me and the worry I know that I have been. But in giving you this ring…let me also say that it is encircled with love and crowned with praise for you are a wonderful friend…whom I love dearly and from whom I will hurt to part from. Please don’t find that third mistake when checking my records…I don’t want to be cut off and the door shut between us as friends. I need your friendship and I need to know that you won’t leave me. The time is fast approaching when I am going to be in dire need of all the friends I can get. Please don’t leave me.

I know that I have never sat down and written a letter to you like this and I know that it may seem a little weird for me to do so now. I was going to send a taped message but I just wasn’t in the mood for it. I will run off some music and soon, but not this minute. I’ll have the time a little later on I’m sure. It’s just a matter of time before I’ll have to stay at home and will need something to keep me busy that can sort of be entertaining for others.

In closing, thank you very much for everything and please be happy, and live for me. I’ll need you.
Sincerely, Elvis Presley

P.S. My girlfriend’s writing this for me, it takes me too long to find the right letters and I can’t do spelling. Her name’s Cindy and she’s going on tour with me a couple days. Her hair’s as red as yours, you know me-got a thing for those red haired girls and this little one’s got freckles too. Hot damn, connect the dots” X0X0 (hugs ‘n kisses)
